Improvement in word attack skills reflects in improved literacy - word attack skills help children to work out words for themselves. When children sound out a new word, they mainly look at the first and last letters - for short cvc words they can pretty much guess the middle! For longer words, they need to break the word down into pieces, tackle each piece separately and then put it back together to form the complete word. A phoneme is the smallest part of spoken language that makes a difference in the meaning of words. English has about 41 phonemes. A few words, such as a or oh, have only one phoneme. Most words, however, have more than one phoneme: The word if has two phonemes (/i/ /f/); check has three phonemes (/ch/ /e/ /k/), and stop has four phonemes (/s/ /t/ /o/ /p/). Sometimes one phoneme is represented by more than one letter.
